Friday Giveaway: Wax Seal Necklace

September 17, 2010

Thanks to everyone who shared your stories about the loved ones in your lives. And congrats to Sarah Solducky, who will be sending her holiday cards with a special seal this year.

Stay tuned for more giveaways by subscribing to theGoods.

This week we’re honored to give away one of Tania Condon’s elegant sterling silver wax seal necklaces, that she will custom engrave for one lucky winner.

And this week, you have the chance to win one, custom made. Your sterling silver wax seal necklace comes with a tiny tag that you can have engraved with the initials of a loved one and a date to mark a special day in your heart. Your pendant also comes with your choice of initial and a block of wax, so you seal your letters with a personal touch.

Tania Condon’s son Julian is the main inspiration for her pieces, including the sterling silver wax seal necklace, available custom-made for $95. After the birth of her son, Tania took up metalsmithing in order to make a bracelet for her newborn baby. She learned first at classes at a college in San Diego and then with the help of other masters in the trade. Using the design of a wax fob she saw in a British Museum, she came up with the idea of the pendant.

Tania says, “I love writing letters and sending them via snail mail and I seal them with a wax seal of the letter T. Sometimes I get carried away and even use the wax seal for my bills!”

Want to win? You know what to do! Leave a comment below telling us what special event or person you might commemorate with a sterling silver wax seal necklace. Then leave a comment on our Facebook wall, and tweet @uncommongoods on Twitter to triple your chances. We’ll announce the random winner on Monday.

  • Reply Debi September 17, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I’d give it to myself (and my husband)! We used a waxed seal “T” on our wedding invitations, candle decorations, and memory book six years ago. But when I decided to put all of those things in a shadow box with our wedding photo, I had lost the seal. I would love this as a replacement so I could finally have the memento I have always wanted.

I would love to have one of these to celebrate our new baby, due in March. We find out its sex in four weeks, but either way we’re going with a J name – Julia or Jacob (it just worked out that way!). Three years ago, when I was pregnant with my first, my husband surprised me with a glass locket from Uncommon Goods with our daughter’s ultrasound photo in it, and I would love to have a necklace for our next child as well.

  • Reply Kathryn Tomasek September 17, 2010 at 3:04 pm

This would be a great 50th birthday present! (she said, thinking about her own upcoming landmark day, a mere 395+ days from now)

  • Reply chel September 17, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I think I’d get a “G” (for my daughter Gracie) and then give it to my mom (“G” also stands for “grandma”)

  • Reply Cari Reynolds September 17, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I went through a period when I was younger when I sealed EVERYTHING with a wax seal. I would love to get back to that. I think the water company would get a kick out of receiving a payment sealed with my initial!

  • Reply Holly September 17, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I used to have a wax seal with my old last name. But I haven’t replaced it since I married!

I would get a “W” for my grandfather (Papa), Wilbur, who passed away 5 years ago. He moved after he retired when I was about 12, and we would always write each other about every other week to keep in touch and I often would wax seal my letters. He was my father figure in my life, so that would be a great reminder of something that we did together.

  • Reply Tracie B. September 17, 2010 at 3:13 pm

I would get one with the letter “N” for my mother Nancy. She lost my father nearly one year ago to cancer. She took care of him through his illness and is the most caring, amazing person I know!

  • Reply pam September 17, 2010 at 3:17 pm

I would get a “J” for my son who we adopted with his birthdate, which also happens to be his adoption date from Russia.

This would be such a nice way to always have a reminder of my daughter close to me. I would have her initial put on it.

  • Reply Bonnie L. September 17, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I would buy one for myself and wear it always with the date “05/12/10” inscribed as a reminder that I SURVIVED. Survived to know that I need to LIVE.

For my mother-in-law Victoria, she is losing her battle with Colon Cancer. One of the most powerful women I have known.

  • Reply Kathy Rycroft September 17, 2010 at 3:24 pm

I would love to have this engraved with my deceased mother in laws initial etc., to give to one of her great granddaughters. There is a special little one that took it really hard when she passed and I think this would help her get through this year.

  • Reply Christina Huber September 17, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Absolutely LOVE this necklace! I would want my husband Pauls initial on it, and the date we got married. It’ll be 17 years in October. We’re a military family, and right now he’s away…which makes the anniversary all the harder and more special!

  • Reply Terri Shepard September 17, 2010 at 3:29 pm

I would get a D because it is the first initial of my last name and my future hubby’s last name! I love sending snail mail, as a “thinking of you” to all of my friends and family, and the wax seal would be an adorable addition (plus its beautiful as a necklace!!!)

  • Reply Susannah September 17, 2010 at 4:01 pm

What a lovely idea! I would ask for the initial J, the first letter of my husband’s name. As an Army wife, I am often alone while my husband is overseas or away on Army business and this necklace would keep him near to my heart and make me feel close to him even while he’s far away.

  • Reply Felicia September 17, 2010 at 4:04 pm

I would get the initial F to represent both my name and the word FINISH to commemorate the line I crossed in publishing my book!
