Wrapper’s Delight Debuts!

July 21, 2010

I’m excited to introduce a new feature to the blog: Wrapper’s Delight! Wrapper’s Delight will focus on creative gift wrapping ideas and techniques from both UG employees, and, hopefully, from our customers as well! If you would like to submit your own ideas for Wrapper’s Delight please email us at wrappers@uncommongoods.com with photos and instructions for your idea. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

And to kick things off, here’s a post from our very own wrap star/graphic designer – Jessica!

Wrapping Odd-Shaped Gifts

I just couldn’t resist buying Uncommon Good’s Tickle Monster Laughter Kit and the Dino Doll for my friend’s son’s first birthday. The Tickle Kit is sold in an easy to wrap, sturdy box. But the Dino Doll was just his big, green, bulbous self.  How would I ever conceal him from from the other children during this outdoor garden party?

Dino Doll and Tickle Monster

It doesn’t help that I waited until 30 minutes before we had to be at the party to wrap them.  Time to improvise!

The supplies:  Leftover wrapping paper (in an adorable nautical print), matching polka dot fabric scraps ($0.99/yard), leftover cotton rope (from when I fixed the toggles on my vintage coat) and an already threaded sewing machine.

1. Cut the fabric down to one sheet that measures 20″ x 52″ and fold it in half (or two sheets at 20″ x 26)”.

2. Sew the rough edges by folding the top down 1/2″, ironing a crisp edge, and then sew a straight stitch across the top of each side to create a clean top edge of the bag.

3. Fold the fabric so the wrong side is out (as if the bag were inside out) and sew along the sides, making sure to leave the top open to fit your gift inside!

4. Turn the bag right side out, fill with your odd shaped gift, gather at the top, and tie with your favorite ribbon, rope, or the like.

In the end, I had two wrapped gifts in under 30 minutes using materials I had in the apartment.  Not only was the bag a perfect fit for the doll, it is reusable!

Happy birthday, Julian!

Adorable! This is a great way to help reduce all of the waste that is associated with something as wonderful as gift giving! I am so passionate about “greening” the gifting process that I started my own little eco-gift wrap company last year. eWrapz (www.ewrapz.com) is reusable fabric gift wrap that is stylish and easy to use. A ready-made, eco-friendly option for those who are not as handy with the thread and needle 🙂
