Bloggers Who Believe It’s Better to Give

October 27, 2016

Thanksgiving Day is less than one month away, which means that we are officially entering the eye of the holiday season! (Cue “Eye of the Tiger.”)

Between between hours of travel, days of holiday dinner prep, and months of coordinating reunions with loved ones, it can be hard to take the time to plan anything that doesn’t revolve around your own seasonal traditions.

But there’s no denying that taking the time to give back is invaluable. All year long, we offer our customers the chance to give back through our Better to Give program. With every purchase you make, we’re proud to donate $1 to a Better to Give partner of your choice (at no cost to you). This year, we want to make sure that giving back is part of your holiday planning. So, we turned to our community to spread the word about our Better to Give program.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Jen Coleman

July 22, 2015

Jen Coleman, PR & Social Media Coordinator

My hometown…
Coral Springs, FL.

I’m passionate about…
Good food, travel, and sustainable living.

If my 6th grade teacher could see me now, he or she would say…
I had two teachers in 6th grade, and I’m sure both of them would make the same comment that every adult who knew me as a child always says: ”When did you get so tall?”

If any fictional character could be my best friend, I would choose….
This is hard! Some people might expect me to say Liz Lemon, but she’s far too busy to be a proper best friend. I would want to be best friends with Deb Perelman, the blogger for Smitten Kitchen. I know she’s not fictional, but bloggers have an online persona, so I consider her a character people follow…yeah, it’s a stretch. But anyway, I just want her to cook for me and tell me funny stories.

Something that always makes me laugh…
Alpacas. They have the funniest facial expressions!

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
Connected and important, but often leads me to a guilt trip. There are so many ways I should improve my choices, starting with cutting down on disposable coffee shop cups.

A song I love so much that I played it until I was sick of it…
I think I have a bad habit of doing this to every song that I fall in love with, so I’ll go with an album instead. Over the years, I’ve played the heck out of Pet Sounds until I can’t listen to it anymore. But usually I just need a little break before I start bingeing again. I love how the same songs take on a new meaning as I get older.

My guilty pleasure is…
Dawson’s Creek. I thought I would outgrow that show and the unrealistic dialogue, but I’m still hooked whenever I watch it.

An uncommon fact about me…
I know the English alphabet just as well backwards and I do in its proper order. And I know the alphabets for three other languages (but not in reverse… yet).

Rainy Days with Amy of A is for Ampersand

March 18, 2012

Hey there, champions! My name is Amy, and I run a silly little corner of the internet called A is for Ampersand where I blog about thrifting escapades, cats, diet coke, and adventures in my 1984 Westfalia Vanagon. I’m a designer and a writer, but mostly just a hoarder in the making with a raging predilection for all things pre-1980.

For the entire sum of my 25 years of life, I’ve always sworn by rain. And to be honest, I might be the only one in the entire universe that doesn’t worship the sun. I’m kind of like that witch in Sword in the Stone that hates sun. Know what I’m talking about? I’ve always dreamed about living in Seattle where it always rains. Seattle natives like to battle me on this, saying I’ll get sick of it. To them I say, yeah right.

So, here are five reasons why rain is THE coolest weather you know. All you sunshine lovers, get ready for a run for your money.

1. Gutter Boat Races
My #1 most awesome childhood memory is making little boats and racing them down the street gutters when it rained. We’d start those boats at our cul-de-sac and follow them alllll the way to the park, which was three blocks away. Why don’t adults do this? Lame.

2. Glorious Thunder
You can fight it all you want, but thunder and lightening storms are pretty much as gorgeous as it gets. Plus, sometimes the power goes out and you get out of work/school, which is always optimum.

3. Slothful Behavior Justification
Sometimes when it’s sunny, you feel like you really need to go out and do something. Yeah, that’s fine, but what about the days when you just want to have a bed-in for peace and start a Grey’s Anatomy marathon? On those days, rain makes this perfectly ok.

4. The Smell. THE SMELL!
You can’t fight it. Rain is THE best smell in the universe. It’s right up there with freshly baked cinnamon rolls and coffee, which both are great things to have on a rainy day.

5. Rain Painting
If you’re a rain hater, it’s probably because you’ve never rain painted. Set out some white construction paper and sprinkle powdered tempera paint on it. Watch as the rain drops blur the powdered paint and create magnificent art.

See? Rain is the BEST. So, next time it rains, grab your best umbrella, get those galoshes, and enjoy it. Happy spring!

Best of the Best Design Blog Posts of 2011

January 3, 2012

1 & 4 / 2 / 3

January is a time to reflect on the passing year and plan for the one ahead. Some of my favorite design blogs are doing just that and rounding up their favorite posts of 2011 to share again for inspiration. Think of it as creative recycling when we need it most. I thought I would be clever and compile a round-up of round-ups.

Stefanie from Brooklyn Limestone has shared her favorite posts from 2011 including home organization tips, beautiful travel photos and exciting DIY tutorials. She also just curated a collection for us– here are her top picks for getting organized in the new year.

In case you don’t have enough blogs to follow, over at Rambling Renovators they have compiled a list of the best blogs from 2011. The series is broken up into different volumes and includes a description of their favorite post from each blog.

Apartment Therapy has been doing a lot of reflecting on 2011. They have even round-up their favorite house tours by month. My favorite is their January round-up for its diversity.

Nole at Oh So Beautiful Paper collected her favorite blog posts from this year categorized by design style. I absolutely love colors and type placement on her pick of neon wedding invitations and watercolor designs.

Having resolved to add more color to my life, I am smitten with re-nest‘s round up of color inspiration posts. After perusing the posts you may have the urge to make a colorful statement in your home.

It may be cathartic for these bloggers to look back and share their successes but I find it so helpful as I plan the improvements I will make in 2012.
