This Just In: Cuddly Cold Weather Gear

September 30, 2011

It’s still warm here in Brooklyn, but it is almost October. We’re going to have to face the fact that it’s fall, and winter’s right around the corner.

With the frosty season on the way, parents out there are likely dreading having to bundle up their little ones in over-sized hats, itchy scarves, and probably-going-to-get-lost-anyway mittens. Fortunately, we have some great new winter wear for kids that’s comfy, cute, and so fun your little munchkins won’t want to leave it behind!

Color Ball Kit

July 21, 2011

Color Ball Kit

Jessica said: “This is a wonderful idea and craft project. I know, as a mother of two, kids will enjoy this and have fun telling their friends that they handmade their own tennis ball. The price is very reasonable and teaches a good skill set. I would purchase this product!”

We’re having a ball choosing products for our community voting app, and we hope you’re enjoying sharing your feedback! Up for voting this week, the Color Ball Kit is a fun and easy way to get started felting. Add warm water and soap to the provided wool, then start squishing and watch the fleece turn into colorful felt as it covers the included tennis balls. Would these bouncy balls make a great craft project for your kids? A fun gift for an aspiring juggler? Cute toys for your favorite pooch? Visit our voting app and let us know how you’d use this creative kit.

This or That? Unstoppable Stoppers & Cute Cups

June 23, 2011

Our City Harvest Design Challenge is going strong, and there’s still time to vote for your favorite Harvest Plate designs. While we’re waiting to find out which design is the next Plate with a Purpose ™ our buyers are tallying up your votes and contemplating your comments on last week’s Community Voting App goods.

From kids activities to cuteness for the kitchen, here are a few of the new goods you loved!

This or That? Activity Book

This or That?

Mel said:  “Another way creative idea that will have my 2nd grader really thinking outside the box and journaling as well! Just to show you how much I like it, I’ll buy it for my son!”

Jessie said:  “Why weren’t companies this smart back when I was a kid. I’m jealous of the future generations that will be so much smarter and more creative and more comfortable expressing themselves as a result of crazy, out-of-the-box-thinking companies like whoever came up with this idea. No fair…. p.s. love it.”

This imaginative book features 50 interactive pairs of illustrations prompting kids to choose “this” or “that.” Playful choices such as “Would you rather be a pirate or a ninja?” prompt kids to get creative in activities including writing poems and stories, drawing and collaging. The community agreed that this kids’ activity book is uncommonly clever.

These delightful door stops hold the door while making a statement! You loved that they are fun, creative and affordable.

Animal Mug with Spoon

Animal Mug With Spoon

Blah said: “These are precious! The spoons are adorable.”

Valerie said: “Super cute! Great for grown ups and kids! Would make a kid drink all their milk, no problem!”

An adorable way to stir sugar in your coffee or chocolate syrup in your milk, you loved that these mug and spoon combos are not only practical, but also pretty darn cute!

Do you love these new goods? Leave a comment and let us know what you think! Each week, we’ll post roundup featuring fresh community approved items. Want to read more comments from voters like you? Check out last week’s roundup and check back soon for more This Just In!

Meet the Author Update

February 24, 2011

We’re so excited to meet author Conor Grennan tomorrow at 3 pm on our Facebook page, and I can tell by all your questions that it’s going to be a great event!

Conor has devoted his life to helping reunite children in Nepal with their families, after a decade-long civil war, and his book Little Princes is a real call to action for all of us.

I think Conor’s going to have some great suggestions for ways we can all help. But I want to start out by telling you about our Better To Give Partner, Next Generation Nepal. Founded by Conor Grennan, this amazing nonprofit offers temporary care and education for children trafficked into Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu, and slowly but surely are reconnecting these children with their families in rural and remote mountain villages.

Right now, you can choose for Next Generation Nepal to receive $1 from us, each time you make a purchase. And on Friday, February 25, in honor of our Q&A with Conor Grennan, we’ll be doubling our donation amount.

So if you haven’t picked up a copy of Little Princes yet, you can make a difference for children at the Little Princes orphanage, by buying your copy on Friday. Just remember to select Next Generation Nepal at checkout!

Opportunity Network

November 3, 2010

The Opportunity Network works to equal the playing field for high-achieving, low-income high school students by creating access for them to career opportunities, professional networks and college. They believe influential networks are essential ingredients for success not emphasized in career development programs for youth, so they take an innovative approach by underscoring the power of personal connections and professional relationships as vital complements to skills and experience. Through unique interaction with executives, intensive college counseling, networking training, coursework in careers, and paid internships, their students dramatically change the course of their futures.

Here’s what Seneca Iscove, UncommonGoods customer service supervisor, has to say:

When I was first introduced to The Opportunity Network, I selfishly wondered, “Where the heck were you people when I needed you?” I wish that there had been a place that I could go to that would not only help me with the daunting and sometimes frightening task of college applications, but also the tools to sustain a successful career once college ended. To go even further, The Opportunity Network has an amazingly successful program of internships that span from Fortune 500 companies to theaters and non-profits. The Opportunity Network recognizes students’ dreams, one at a time, right here in New York City.

I was a New York City high school student and regrettably, there was nothing like The Opportunity Network for me. I was a latch-key kid in a low income neighborhood, raised by a single mother who worked three jobs in order to care for my sister and I. Our focus was to get as far away from our neighborhoods as we could. The only alternatives seemed to be entertainment, sports and college. But the reality was, many kids in my neighborhood were unprepared for college.

Over worked and under paid educators began to speak to us about “realistic goals,” goals that did not include college for many of us. Although my mother worked too long and too hard to have much involvement in my schoolwork, I somehow made it through.

“On my own” is the theme of many high school students who struggle with getting out of their desperate situations and create a better life for themselves. Students like Eric, a Bronx native like me who was not only the first in his family to get as far as junior year in high school, but also the first in his school to be accepted to an ivy league school through the help of The Opportunity Network. The first in his school! Imagine that!

Imagine how many more can be helped through the dedicated work of The Opportunity Network? Now that I am a mother there is nothing in the world that means more to me than our children. They are indeed our future and there is no reason that they should continue to struggle and miss out on their dreams because of the misfortune that has befallen them. With the amazing work of The Opportunity Network, they no longer have to.

Vote for Opportunity Network on Facebook today.
