In high school, I was a (nerd, geek, jock, stoner, popular kid, prodigy, academic achiever, drama kid, arty kid, juvenile delinquent, mean girl/guy, goth, student body president, name your type)…
Straight edge vegan punk kid.

If I could travel back in time, I’d…
High five Nikola Tesla. Alternating current; very cool, much appreciated.

An uncommon fact about me…
My superpower is visually identifying whether or not ketchup is produced by Heinz.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Kat Guerrero

August 20, 2015

KatGuerrero

Kat Guerrero, UncommonGoods Planner

My hometown…
Temecula, CA. This is actually a place where the Real Housewives go on their wine vacations…. Might be why I went so far away!

I’m inspired by…
All of the wonderful things you can do with Excel.

When I was a kid, my favorite television program was…
Batman. Amazing because he is pretty much the only super hero who is still “super” without special powers. I would want to be Robin. Batman has too much responsibility and I’d rather ride a motorcycle.

If I could learn to do one thing perfectly, it would be…
Make ice cream.

My favorite place to go in New York City is…
Mikey Likes It Ice Cream, in the East Village.

In my next life, I want to come back as…
An extremely successful ice cream shop owner.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’ve met an elephant.

Robert Colon – UncommonGoods Operations Associate

My hometown…
Brooklyn, NY.

If I could meet anyone, living or not, I would choose…
Al Pacino.

If I could become an expert on one thing that I’m not already, it would be…
Playing darts.

Within the next 10 years, I hope to be…
Retired.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’ve only had three jobs in my lifetime, and one of them was for 35 years.

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Ed Morales

August 12, 2015

EdwinMorales

Ed Morales – UncommonGoods Operations Associate

My hometown…
Brooklyn, NY

I’m inspired by…
Anyone with a disability. They still get up to do what they have to do like going to work, driving, exercising, living life, etc.

My favorite process in the UncommonGoods warehouse is…
Learning everything I can about the warehouse operation.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Enjoying the day off with my family and friends.

I’m stubborn about…
Nothing.

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is…
Becoming a good father and a good man.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was shot in the leg when I was fifteen. Till this day I don’t know who did it. I have the scar to remind me of that day. P.s. I wasn’t a bad kid, if you’re wondering.

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Megan Stickel

August 8, 2015

MeganStickel
Megan Stickel, UncommonGoods Associate Buyer, Children & Desktop, Merchandising

My hometown…
Phillipsburg, NJ – known for having one of the oldest football rivalries in the country with neighboring Easton, PA. I never went to a single game but apparently it’s a big deal.

An uncommon fact about me…
I enjoy doing chores. Mowing the lawn has always been a favorite and I find weed whacking to be especially satisfying and fun.

My guilty pleasure is…
Having too many cats.

I’m passionate about…
Tacos.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is…
It’s a toss-up between the Great Ocean Road in Australia and Bjork at ACL (Austin City Limits) in 2007.

My favorite place to eat in New York City is…
Too many places! I really love this Korean place called Hangawi where you have to take your shoes off. Other favorites are Candle Café, Champs Diner, and Angelica Kitchen.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Obsessively cleaning my apartment. Once I finish with that, I usually like to hang out on this random stoop with my friends – sounds lame but it’s actually perfect because none of us live there, so people just come and go as they please. No commitment!

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
I love the outdoors. I grew up in a very rural area and spent a lot of time hiking in the woods, playing in streams, and riding bikes up very steep hills. I love animals and have very strong feelings on how humans use them. I think that a lot of people are beginning to open their eyes to the truths of this as well as how we treat the environment – and that’s a great thing.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Open a massive animal sanctuary! Also, buy a bunch soft-serve ice cream machines and open a fully vegan/non-dairy mini version of something like 16 Handles.

My style is…
Mmmm, I don’t know. I’m pretty simple and just want to be comfortable and boring. Whenever I buy something that’s not basic, I end up having no clue how to wear it and it just sits in my closet. I wish I could pull more things off!

 DeliaArteaga

Delia Arteaga, Head of Recruitment

Describe yourself in 3 words.
Talkative, charming, and warm.

I’m inspired by…
People being kind to each other and animals.

My favorite thing about working in Recruiting is…
I LOVE seeing people grow into their careers and the feeling of calling someone to say ‘You got the job!!’ is extremely rewarding.

My guilty pleasures are…
My couch, Ben & Jerry’s, and Netflix.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was born in Lima, Peru but grew up speaking German.

Something that always makes me laugh…
My family – both human and animal.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
That leadership does not have to be intimidating, we have some incredibly down to Earth and kind leaders here.

Where did you grow up and why aren’t you there now?
My country was going through domestic terrorism and my parents wanted my sister and I to have an opportunity at a normal childhood. They gave up their careers, our home, friends, and family and started over in the US. My parents are my heroes.

ArnoldMcMayo

My hometown….
Port of Spain, Trinidad

I’m inspired by…

If any fictional character could be my best friend, I would choose….
John Wick.

Music.

Grace Before Meals in Brooklyn

My style is…
All about comfort.

An uncommon fact about me…
I won the ‘Wittiest Person’ in my graduating high school class.

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Jason Walters

July 28, 2015

JasonWalters
Jason Walters – UncommonGoods Operations Coordinator

My hometown…
Peterstown, West Virginia.

I’m passionate about…
Books, movies and TV. I love that they allow us to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

The best gift I’ve ever received is…
A quilt that my grandmother made for me. I’ve moved around a lot on my way to Brooklyn and I can’t say that I have too many of the possessions that I started out with, but the quilt will always be something that I bring along.

The word or phrase that best describes me…
Easygoing.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
When the weather is nice, I try to spend as much time outside as possible, so a picnic in the park or drinks outdoors are two of my favorite warm weather activities. Otherwise, you’ll probably find me at BAM. I try my best to see all the movies that come through.

Something that always makes me laugh…
Bad puns, Popsicle stick jokes, general Dad humor. In fact, here’s a freebie, where do cantaloupes spend their summer vacations?………..At John Cougar’s Melon Camp! You’re welcome.

The most challenging thing I’ve ever done is…
Deciding whether or not to tell you, the internet, the Melon Camp joke. Ultimately, I thought the world a better place with that joke out there. Again, you’re welcome.

If my 6th grade teacher could see me now, he or she would say…
“Oh, hi Jason, I see you finally got the braces off….and is the beard new?”

An uncommon fact about me…
I am a Knight of the Golden Horseshoe. Every year in West Virginia, students who score well on a test covering history, geography, economy, government, and general state trivia (Did you know that Don Knotts and Mary Lou Retton are from WV?) get inducted into the Society of the Golden Horseshoe. The end result is a knighting ceremony where each student kneels and then someone would do the thing where they tap a sword on both of your shoulders! I’m not positive that my knighthood is legitimate in any way, but occasionally I will request that people call me by my proper title of Sir Jason. No one ever has….
