Fabian Garcia | UncommonGoods

Fabian Garcia, UncommonGoods Operations Associate Supervisor
My hometown is…
New York City

I’m inspired by…
My kids.

My favorite process in the UncommonGoods warehouse is…
THE MACHINE! (A machine in our warehouse that allows us to automatically pack certain products, saving time and packing materials.)

Since working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
How to be more vocal.

The word that best describes me…
Punctual, leader, and determined. Oh you only wanted one. Lol.

My guilty pleasure is…
Playing video games.

If my 3rd grade teacher could see me now, he or she would say…
“I’m so proud of you for the person you are today.”

Would you rather…have perfect self-discipline OR no self-discipline, but never feel frustrated?
No self-discipline.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Mark Curtis

June 21, 2014

Mark Curtis | UncommonGoods

Mark Curtis, UncommonGoods Senior Web Developer
My hometown is…
Milford PA; as seen on Dale’s shirt in the movie Step Brothers.

The tech project I most enjoyed working on at UncommonGoods was…
The bios page, it holds a secret.

I’m inspired by…
Animation from interactivity. Static elements are boring.

My favorite place to visit in New York City is…
A local, non Starbucks, coffee shop.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was in flash mobs. It’s okay to act crazy in public if everyone else is doing it!

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Making witty jokes about whatever current situation I’m in.

The word that best describes me…
Sassy.

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned
How to work on a team and how valuable I am to said team.

Would You Rather… have to relive the same day over and over for a month (but get to pick up right where you left off) OR fast forward a month (but get thrown into the middle of things without knowing what happened in the month you skipped over)?
Do I get control that day? I’d definitely pick that one. The other just sounds like having been in a coma.

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Cassie Tweten Delaney

June 17, 2014

Cassie Tweten Delaney | UncommonGoods

Cassie Tweten Delaney, Senior Editor

My hometown is…
Fargo-Moorhead (North Dakota-Minnesota). It’s an interesting situation where two cities form one metropolitan area, but the area spans two states. Technically, I grew up in Moorhead, so I’m a Minnesotan. Yes, people there really do say things like “you betcha” and “Uff da.”

I’m inspired by…
Science, and fiction, and science fiction.

My guilty pleasure is….
How I Met Your Mother. (I read ahead.) Actually, TV in general. I make a lot of slightly outdated pop culture references (mostly to The Simpson’s seasons 1-10 and Seinfeld), but I’m also completely addicted to a bundle of more recent shows, like Game of Thrones and Mad Men.

An uncommon fact about me…
The first published copy I ever wrote appeared in my city’s newspaper when I was 12 years old, after I won a contest asking students to create an advertisement for a local bank. I did the art for the ad as well. I ended up building a career around writing, but my drawing ability hasn’t improved much over the past couple of decades.

My favorite bookstore in New York City is…
This is a tough one. It depends on what I’m looking for. My favorite used bookstore is Unnamable Books in my neighborhood. To browse what’s new I’ll stop in at Greenlight Bookstore. If I’m not really sure what I want, I’ll head to the Strand, because they have everything.

My favorite episode of How I Met Your Mother is…
That one where Ted tells a funny story that has very little to do with how he actually met their mother. (But if I actually had to pick, I think I’d say the one where the gang sets up rules for becoming “a real New Yorker” and they all race to see Woody Allen eating at a restaurant downtown.)

Since working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
The importance of TAGFEE (Transparent, Authentic, Generous, Fun, Empathetic, Exceptional) and the value of working on a team that believes in the power of those tenets.

Also, through working on this Uncommon Personalities project, I’ve learned how interesting and funny my co-workers really are.

Would you rather…never get to shop on the Internet again OR only get to express yourself in 140 characters or less for the rest of your life?
I can be pretty wordy, so I think I’d have to go with not shopping on the Internet. It might be a fun challenge to find a loophole and figure out how to buy things anyway (without really breaking the rules).

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Sheronne Peters

June 12, 2014

Sheronne Peters | UncommonGoods

Sheronne Peters, UncommonGoods Vendor Operations Coordinator
My hometown is…
Brooklyn, NY

An uncommon fact about me…
It could be a slight Napoleon complex I have going on or having an older brother but I am a very competitive person, always aiming to win. I frequently have silent walking competitions with unaware people on the street – SSHHH!

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
There are people out there that are genuinely ready to help you better yourself.

I’m inspired by…
People, good or bad; their actions in one way or another shape how I choose to carry myself.

If my 6th grade teacher could see me now, he or she would say…
“Aww, Ms. Peters, we still can’t get you to stop talking.”

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is…
When I was about twelve, my older brother pulled the “I’m older” card when we discovered bubble gum flavored toothpaste in my house, so he went first to try it out. About a minute into brushing with his teeth tightly clamped together he mumbles, “is ooo.” I’m sitting there with tooth brush in hand waiting my turn and he continues, “is ooo.” It turned out to be bubble gum flavored denture glue and he glued his mouth shut. It may not be what people constitute as a beautiful thing to see, but I’ve never laughed so hard. With the cool persona my brother tends to portray, this was a beautiful thing to me.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Donate to as many charities as I can without going too overboard, this little lady would like to own a house of her own someday.

Would you rather…have your own library filled with every book you’ve ever read or wanted to read OR have the ability to remember any 10 books word for word?
I’ve never said this out loud–but I don’t like when people are able to quote parts of movies during conversations, like I’m supposed to know what they’re talking about. 99% of the time I wouldn’t know, even if I’ve seen the movie numerous times. So you would imagine this goes for books as well… so library of books it is!

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Kevin Davis

May 20, 2014

Kevin Davis |UncommonGoods

Kevin Davis, UncommonGoods Drop Ship Lead
My hometown is…
Brooklyn, New York

I’m Inspired by…
Being a singer, I’m inspired by music.

My style is…
Being comfortable.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen was…
My very first pay check that I had earned almost 33 years ago, which gave me a sense of responsibility.

An uncommon fact about me…
Is that I have 32 godchildren.

I’m stubborn about…
Time, since it is important and can be very precious to others, I feel it should never be wasted.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
That although I don’t attend a lot of them, we have quite a bit of meetings.

Would you rather…invent a vaccine against procrastination, or against rudeness?
I would rather invent a vaccination for rudeness; as the old saying goes, “You can catch more flies with honey, than you can vinegar.”

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Kelvin Eweka

May 4, 2014

Kelvin Eweka | UncommonGoods

Kelvin Eweka, UncommonGoods Software Developer

My hometown is…
Torrance, California

I’m inspired by…
Strong-willed, outgoing, yet humble people. I believe success in life starts with how well you act and interact with other people positively.

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
Not as strong as I’d like it to be. I need to visit more often.

The best luck I’ve had in my life so far was…
It’s hard to say, I feel I’ve been pretty lucky throughout life with the experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met. It’s hard to pick out any one thing.

In my next life, I want to come back as…
A slightly shorter person; I’ve discovered too many things to hit my head on while walking. But seriously, just myself in a different time and a different place to experience life from a different perspective with different decisions.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’m a fourth generation descendant of King of the long existing Benin Kingdom, Oba Eweka II. If my Great Grandfather was born first instead of second and my Father was also born first instead of second, I would have had a completely different life.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
That the company values quality, friendly and well-mannered people. It’s always a joy coming into work knowing you’re going to see friendly faces.

Would you rather… not need sleep or not need food and water?
Not need sleep! Who wouldn’t want more hours to get work done or do fun things?

The Uncommon Life

April 27, 2014

Micah Telesford, UncommonGoods Operations Supervisor

Progress.

My favorite process in the warehouse is…
Packing.

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
The true value of teamwork and communication.

When I was little, I dreamed of…
Toys.

The most challenging thing I’ve ever done is…
Ride my bike uphill in Prospect Park.

Would you rather…… have the ability to read minds, or to tell the future?
I would rather be able to read minds; I’m a big fan of Professor Xavier.

The Uncommon Life

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Andrei Gaidai

April 25, 2014

Andrei Haidai | UncommonGoods

Andrei Gaidai, UncommonGoods Software Developer
My hometown is…
I grew up in Grodno, Belarus and I am currently living Brooklyn, NY.

The word that best describes me…
“Let’s try.” I couldn’t fit it in one word, but these are the two words I think best describe myself. I love to try new things and get new experience.

I’m inspired by…
Purposeful people. I respect them and try to learn to be one of them.

When I’m not working I’m probably…
Spending time with my family. I have a wonderful wife and daughter. They are my everything. We try to spend all our free time together having fun or visiting friends.

An uncommon fact about me…
I can sleep whole night in the same position without moving at all.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Spend the money wisely, trying to make the world a better place. Like giving money to people who really really need it (e.g. those who are waiting for expensive surgeries).

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
A lot of new technical things, and I met a lot of people who are interesting and dedicated to their work. I am proud to be part of this amazing team.

Would you rather…be a human being with the mind of a robot, or be a robot with a human mind?
Be a robot with a human mind; I believe eventually this is what will happen with human beings. Robots don’t get sick or tired–and having your own mind you can enjoy life even in a robot body. Nobody will hack your mind [if it’s human], but if you are a human with a robot mind you have a risk to be hacked.
