Uncommon Personalities: Meet Michael Stokes

December 22, 2015

Michael Stokes | UncommonGoodsMichael Stokes, UncommonGoods Customer Service Team Lead

My hometown…
Technically Brooklyn NY, (Brownsville) by birth, but I spent the bulk of my formative years in Elizabeth NJ. (That’s right, I’m a JerseyBoi.)

I’m passionate about…
I love to cook, and event planning. I love seeing small details come together to make an event a huge success.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Relaxing on my porch with a homemade margarita, or in my room playing video games.

Something that always makes me laugh…
Anything that Stewie on Family Guy says

My spirit animal is…
That all depends on which religion and/or cultural reference we are looking at this from. Native American – I am the deer. I am a horse in some tribes. And I am a Spider Monkey some African practices such as Yoruba.

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
Not very good. I hate to get dirty, and Mother Nature has a lot of dirt. So I try my best to avoid her.

My favorite place to eat in New York City is…
Caliente Cab on 7th and Bleeker

If I could throw the perfect party…
I’d rent a modern glass house that had a huge pool and a great view. The house would be divided into 3 areas one that is comfortable for sitting and holding conversation with seating for people to eat. The pool area, and another large room for dancing with a healthy mix of reggae and R&B music.

An uncommon fact about me…
I have a twin sister. She is my polar opposite in every way. (We do not get along at all.)

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Valeria Neal

December 15, 2015

Valeria Neal | UncommonGoodsValeria Neal, UncommonGoods Systems Administrator, Technology

My hometown…
Brooklyn, New York!

I’m inspired by…
Music. I’m always listening to new music for ideas and inspiration.

An uncommon fact about me…
I know the first 30 numbers of the Golden Ratio.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Use some of the money to fund films I would like to see made.

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
We’re cool on most days but I’m going to need her to keep my summers hot and winters cold. I’m not a fan of unpredictable weather.

My favorite food of all time is…
French Fries! Potato Corner has a lifelong customer!

The best luck I’ve had in my life so far was…
Getting accepted into a IT training program. I’ve been immersed in IT ever since and can’t imagine doing anything else.

Something that always makes me laugh…
Inside jokes from people who grew up in the same generation as me.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Elisha Janas

December 8, 2015

Elisha Janas | UncommonGoodsElisha Janas – UncommonGoods Assistant Graphic Designer, Product Development

My hometown…
Fulton, NY. It’s a small city in upstate NY.

I’m inspired by…
Typography, architecture, textures and anything vintage.

An uncommon fact about me…
One of my ancestors, Abraham Clark, signed the Declaration of Independence. I did a report on him in 4th grade but all I can remember about him is that his signature says “Abra Clark”.

I’m stubborn about…
Details. It’s all in the details. For example, subtle color or font change can make all the difference in the overall look of a product.

If I’m not working, I am probably…
Doodling with gel pens, embroidering paper or reading on a subway platform because I missed my train.

When I was little, I dreamed of…
Playing in the WNBA, even though I was never very tall. I figured if Muggsy Bogues could do it, I could, too.

My guilty pleasure is…
80’s music.

My style is…
Clean and modern as a designer but eclectic and comfortable as a decorator.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Anuli Akanegbu

November 20, 2015

Anuli Akanegbu | UncommonGoodsAnuli Akanegbu, UncommonGoods Vendor Relations Associate

My hometown is…
Laurel, MD. The city of Laurel has land in three counties, so you now know my home town, but not where I’m from. Weird, right?

When I was a kid my favorite television program was…
“Arthur” even though I never understood how an aardvark could have a dog as a pet. I still watch the show occasionally on Netflix. The show has some pretty catchy songs like the “Library Card Song.”

My style is…
All black everything. Despite having a pretty colorful apartment, these days I mostly wear all black with hints of colors like grey and navy blue. I know that doesn’t really count though, but I fully believe that nothing is the new black. Plus, I think there is something sophisticated about the color black. Maybe because it’s harder to tell when you spilled something on your shirt.

My guilty pleasure is…
Watching British reality shows on YouTube. Not the good ones either, I’m talking about “Jersey Shore” quality here.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Start off by paying my student loans and see how much I have left. How much did I win, exactly?

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Scouring the beauty section for the perfect shade of “nude” nail polish, watching “30 for 30” films on Netflix and perfecting my recipes for guilt-free desserts.

An uncommon fact about me…
My name means “joy” or “daughter who brings happiness” in the Nigerian language of Igbo.

Would you rather…Only speak and write in clichés for an entire day, or ride a tricycle to work through the snow?
I pretty much only speak in clichés and random pop culture references, so that would just be a regular day for me.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Sean Cullen

November 12, 2015

Sean Cullen | UncommonGoods

Sean Cullen, UncommonGoods Human Resources Project Manager

My hometown is…
A New Jersey suburb, DON’T JUDGE ME.

I’m inspired by…
People who do good, literature, travel, and television commercials.

An uncommon fact about me…
I had a piece accepted to McSweeneys Internet Tendency. I’m 95% confident this is what Ben Franklin’s To Do list looked like. I can also name the starting five for every NBA Basketball team during the 1995-1996 season.

In high school, were you a nerd, geek, jock, a popular kid, an academic achiever, a drama kid, arts kid, juvenile delinquent, mean girl, goth, student body president, or some other type?
D. All of the above.

Something that always makes me laugh…
Is when my 94 year-old Nan eats Pop Rocks.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Eating pork buns or sitting in a sauna, sometimes both.

If I could meet anyone, living or not, I would choose…
Living.

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
Let’s just put it this way – the measure of our mutual attraction has never been stronger.

If I could learn anything, it would be…
How to learn everything instantaneously… especially ventriloquism.
