The Story Behind the Location Choice for Our Holiday Showcase

Every product we sell has a story, so it only makes sense that every event we host does, too. This is the story about how we selected the location for our recent Holiday Showcase editor’s event.

Before the holiday season officially starts our public relations (PR) team hosts Holiday Showcase events to give our media friends an opportunity to meet the uncommon people behind UncommonGoods and interact with our creative assortment of goods in-person. In July, we hosted an event in Chelsea for our long-lead media friends who we know start working on their holiday-themed content during the summer. In November, we brought it back to Brooklyn to host a second Holiday Showcase event for our online media friends who work on shorter deadlines.

For our November Holiday Showcase we wanted to show our editor friends some of the neat things that are happening on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Although UncommonGoods operates out of the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal on the scenic Upper Bay in Sunset Park we chose a location in Brooklyn that would give editors a glimpse at the future of design. We chose to host our Holiday Showcase at the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator (BF+DA).

The entrance of the BF+DA is dedicated to spreading the message of sustainable design. 

The BF+DA is a hub for ethical fashion and design that provides emerging designers and established brands with the resources they need to grow their businesses. The BF+DA, which is connected with the Pratt Institute, celebrated its one-year anniversary just a few days before our Holiday Showcase, so the space was buzzing with an optimistic energy focused on how design entrepreneurs can inspire real change and make a positive impact on the world.  The BF+DA believes that design entrepreneurs are the key to the future. We do, too. As a company, we are focused on our commitment to sustainability and creative design. In fact, our name “UncommonGoods,” plays with the concept of the “common good,” or the conviction that doing good in the world is also good business.

Since 1999, we have worked towards building a community of passionate people that celebrate artists and enjoy surrounding themselves with creative design. When our PR team learned about the BF+DA it only made sense for us to develop a relationship with the like-minded community of design entrepreneurs working out of the space. Not only that, but we wanted our Holiday Showcase to serve as an opportunity to share our commitment to creative design with our media friends. If programs like the BF+DA represent the future of design then the industry is heading in a good direction.
